" "The ratio of glycerol/free fatty acids and membrane lipids in membrane fractions from hamster tissues. Free glycerol and free fatty acids were measured in five different subcellular fractions from Syrian hamster adipose tissue and liver. The fractions were prepared by differential and sucrose gradient centrifugation. Glycerol and free fatty acids were measured by gas chromatography. All fractions contained more free glycerol than free fatty acids. The highest proportion of free fatty acids occurred in the plasma membrane fractions from liver, while in the membranes from adipose tissue, all fractions had a high proportion of free fatty acids except the plasma membrane fraction. In all tissues, a positive correlation was found between the relative amounts of glycerol and the proportion of free fatty acids in the same fraction. All plasma membrane fractions had a higher proportion of free glycerol and free fatty acids than the other fractions. In the liver, the plasma membranes had a higher ratio of free fatty acids/glycerol than the other liver fractions. In the adipose tissue, the plasma membrane had a lower ratio of free fatty acids/glycerol than the other fractions, and there was a positive correlation between this ratio and the degree of unsaturation of the triglyceride.Sheila K.
